Local Knowledge

Long, Low Rooflines Are a Different Design Problem

A lot of Hillwood is mid-century ranch and updated traditional, which means long horizontal rooflines rather than tall gables. That sounds easier to light and is actually harder to light well. A single straight run across sixty feet of eave with nothing else going on reads flat from the street. The fix is layering: roof edge plus columns, entry, landscape beds or trees, so the elevation has some depth to it.

The lots do the rest of the work. Wide frontages and mature hardwoods off the Harding Pike side give you room for real tree lighting, which on a low-profile house often carries the display more than the roof does.

Plenty of homes here have been renovated with added dormers, extensions and changed roof planes. Those junctions are where generic light kits fail. We measure and cut each plane separately so the line stays continuous through every change in direction.

  • Long ranch eaves and layered design
  • Mature hardwood tree lighting

Planning the Install

Building Depth Into a Low-Profile Elevation

A long single-storey roofline is the hardest common shape to light well, and Hillwood has a lot of them. Sixty feet of straight eave with nothing else lit reads as a bright line and very little else from the street. The fix is depth: the roof edge plus a second and third layer at different heights, so the eye has somewhere to travel.

In practice that means columns or porch uprights, the entry itself, landscape beds along the front of the house, and the trees. On a low house the trees frequently do more work than the roof, and the wide frontages and mature hardwoods off the Harding Pike side give real room for that.

Renovation junctions are the other Hillwood specific. A great many homes here have gained dormers, extensions or a changed roof pitch at some point, and those junctions are exactly where a pre-cut kit gaps or doubles back. Each plane is measured and cut on its own so the line stays continuous through the change.

Order matters if the budget is finite. Roof edge and entry first, then one substantial tree, then the beds along the front of the house. That sequence gets a low-profile elevation looking three-dimensional for the least outlay, and each stage can be added in a later season without redoing the one before it.

  • Layered lighting at three heights
  • Renovation junctions measured separately
  • Tree lighting used to carry a low elevation

This is my second year using Red Nose Lites, and I must say that they continue to impress me. I had gotten a quote from another local company and after they were unable to fulfill their obligation, I called Riley at Red Nose. They were able to have my lights installed the next day and cost significantly less than the other company’s quote!! I will absolutely be using them again in the future and highly recommend them!

Frequently Asked Questions

My Hillwood house is a long single-story ranch. What works best?

Layering. A roof edge on its own tends to read flat on a low horizontal elevation, so we usually combine it with entry, column or landscape lighting and at least one lit tree to give the front some depth.

Our roof was extended in a renovation. Can you still get a clean line?

Yes. Changed roof planes and added dormers are exactly where pre-cut kits fail. Each plane gets measured and cut on its own so the line stays continuous.

How much does Christmas light installation cost?

A long low Hillwood roofline is inexpensive per foot but rarely looks right on its own, so most quotes here include a second layer at the entry, beds or trees. You can also stage it across seasons. Call us on (615) 595-9686 for a firm price.
