
Most Christmas light trouble is not a light problem. It is a power problem. A run goes dark halfway down the gutter on the first cold night. A breaker pops every evening at five when the timer fires. An outdoor outlet will not reset no matter how many times you push the button. Usually the cause is the same: too much load landed on one circuit, or the wrong cord is carrying it.
Here is how to work out what your circuits can actually take, and where the math changed once LED took over.
Start with volts, amps and watts
Three numbers and one piece of arithmetic. Household power in the United States runs at about 120 volts. A breaker is rated in amps, and the general purpose circuits in a house are usually 15 or 20 amps. Watts is volts multiplied by amps.
- 15 amp circuit: 15 x 120 = 1800 watts
- 20 amp circuit: 20 x 120 = 2400 watts
That is the ceiling, not the target. Loading a circuit right to its rating is how you spend December resetting breakers in the cold.
The 80 percent rule
Anything that runs for hours at a stretch is treated as a continuous load, and a continuous load should not exceed 80 percent of the breaker rating. Christmas lights run four to six hours a night, every night, for weeks. Treat them as continuous.
- 15 amp circuit, working limit: 12 amps, or 1440 watts
- 20 amp circuit, working limit: 16 amps, or 1920 watts
Those two numbers, 1440 and 1920, are the ones worth writing on a sticky note before you buy anything. And remember the circuit may already be doing other work. The outlet on your porch is often on the same breaker as the garage, the back patio, an exterior floodlight, sometimes a bathroom. Whatever is already plugged in there comes off your budget first.
Why LED changed the math
Old incandescent C9 bulbs were small heaters with a decorative job on the side. One strand pulled a serious slice of a circuit, which is why the old advice was to connect no more than two or three sets end to end.
LED strands draw a fraction of that for the same look, so on a modern display the breaker is rarely what stops you. Two other limits show up first.
- The end to end limit printed on the box. Manufacturers state the maximum number of sets you may connect in one run. That limit is about the wire gauge and the plug on the strand, not your breaker, so it applies no matter how much headroom the circuit has.
- Voltage drop on long runs. Push power a long way down thin wire and the far end goes dim or slightly off color. The fix is a heavier cord feeding that side, not more strands in the chain.
What still eats a circuit fast is anything with a motor or a heavier draw: inflatables, projectors, blow molds, older spotlights. A yard of LED roofline plus one large inflatable is often mostly the inflatable.
How to add up your own display
You do not need a meter. You need to read tags.
- Look at the tag molded near the male plug on each strand, or the panel on the box. It will list watts per set, amps per set, or both.
- List everything that will run off one outlet: roofline, bushes, wrapped columns, wreath, inflatable, projector, the timer itself.
- Add the watts. Compare the total against 1440 for a 15 amp circuit or 1920 for a 20 amp circuit.
- If you only have amps, multiply by 120 to get watts. If you only have watts, divide by 120 to get amps.
Find out which outlets share a breaker
Most people guess wrong here. Switch one breaker off, then walk the house with a lamp or a phone charger and check which outlets went dead. Write it on the panel door with a pencil. That five minute job in November prevents most of the December problems.
GFCI trips are a different problem
Outdoor receptacles are GFCI protected, and a GFCI does not trip on overload. It trips because current is leaking somewhere it should not be. In a Nashville December that usually means water: a connection sitting in a puddle, a cracked socket, a nick where a strand rubbed a gutter edge.
So if the breaker in the panel pops, check your load math. If the little button on the outlet pops, go looking for moisture. Keep connections up off the ground and use in use covers. To find the culprit, unplug sections one at a time and reset between each.
Cords carry the load too
The cord is part of the circuit, and a thin cord is the weak link in a lot of home displays.
- Gauge is backwards from what people expect. Lower number means thicker wire. A 16 gauge cord is fine for a short hop. Longer runs want 14 gauge or 12 gauge.
- Check the jacket for an outdoor rating. Indoor cords stiffen and crack in the cold and were never built to sit in wet grass.
- Do not daisy chain cord into cord into cord. Use one cord long enough for the job.
- Check the amp rating on your timer or smart plug. Plenty of them are rated well below what a full front yard pulls.

When doing it yourself is the right call
Often it is. If you are running one 30 foot roofline you can reach from a step ladder plus a couple of bushes, all off a single outlet, you do not need a contractor and you should not pay anyone for power advice. The tag on the plug and the numbers above tell you everything.
It changes when the house is two stories, when there are dormers or steep pitches, when you want big pines wrapped, or when you are lighting a business front where a dark section on a Friday night costs you something.
